I knew it. Of course I did. At least I thought I did. While all logical signs pointed to Jeff Green leaving Georgetown a year early, why did I convince myself he'd come back? I don't know. This hurts just as much as, if not more than, the realization that Kevin Durant was heading out.
No, no. This definitely sucks a whole lot more. From the first game of the season, we all knew Durant was one and done. Even up until today, there was the off chance that Green might come back with Hibby Bear and field the odds-on favorite for 2008 national champion.
It's not just the range. It's not just the versatility to play three positions (and play them well). And it's not even just the passing.
It's that Jeff Green represented everything that is still great and inspiring and beautiful about college basketball. He did everything necessary to improve himself, his teammates, his coach, and his school. He left nothing on the court nor in the locker room. I guess this doesn't change that. Jeff's still an unbelievable player and teammate. Sometimes we just need reminders that players like Jeff are still out there.
Damn you for making it impossible to hate you for this, Jeff.
