Great Expectations

For those of you that clicked on this post hoping for a discourse on the book of the same name, I'm sad to say you came to the wrong place. This is just a one time thing...If we were in the business of comparing basketball to required high school reading, the post after losing to Xavier at home would have been titled Jane Eyre, in honor of the worst fucking book in the history of the world.

No, we're here to discuss expectations for this year's Flyers team. Before the season, we discussed what would constitute a successful season for the team (in our opinion...the only opinion we generally care about...we're selfish like that).

We came up with a list of five things:
  1. Make a postseason tournament. If it had to be the NIT, it was make the NIT and at least win a game. If the Flyers were dancing, we'd prefer they win at least one game, but we'd be happy to just make the tournament.
  2. Beat Xavier at Xavier.
  3. Beat Louisville at Louisville.
  4. Beat Pittsburgh to make up for last year's debacle at their house.
  5. National exposure for Brian Roberts, including NBA talk.
  6. Noticeable player development.

The season's not over, so we can't make a final judgment, but with a few games left this year, let's take a look at where we stand:

  1. The jury is still out on this one, but it looks like we're at least going to make the NIT if we can win a few of these last few games. The NCAA Tournament isn't out of the question yet, although it's unlikely. I can absolutely see this team coming together at just the right time (Chris Wright comes back) and pulling out a small miracle by winning the Atlantic 10 tournament. Do I think it will actually happen? No, the A-10's too deep this year. If it does happen though...fuck. I've already taken off of work for the NCAA Tournament opening round....I don't even want to think of the Guns n' Roses-level destruction we're going to put on Cleveland when our group of friends takes a field trip there to watch the games. Verdict: undecided.

  2. Well, we didn't beat X at X. Big fucking surprise there. And we're not going to do it this year. We still have a chance to beat X as a "visitor" in the A-10 tournament, but it's not the same. Verdict: fuck off Xavier.

  3. We beat Louisville at Louisville. I was there bitches. My bar tab still bears the scar of a weekend of celebrations. Verdict: eat it, Pitino, you smarmy asshole.

  4. Dayton certainly avenged last year's loss at Pittsburgh. Again, I was there, laughing my fucking ass off watching Jamie Dixon squirm on the sidelines. My liver still bears the liver disease of a weekend of celebrations. Verdict: still pissed those pansies down in front wouldn't move to let us storm the court.

  5. B-Rob's gotten a ton of pub this year -- well deserved pub, despite what Stanley "Stephon Marbury Jr." Burrell says. People that are on NBA draft radars: Brian Roberts. People so far down NBA draft radars that we might confuse their ranking with George Washington's RPI: Stanley Burrell. Brian's midseason slump (questionable: flu, probable: Chris Wright's foot) might have dropped him down a bit, but with a big last month, I'd expect to hear more chatter about Mr. Roberts' chances of making the NBA. But don't call him Mr. Roberts, that's his father. Verdict: pretty lame joke Loblaw.

  6. Despite what all the Armageddonists over at UD Pride will have you think, Brian Gregory has been developing players.

Kurt Huelsman last year was a glorified James Cribe with a slightly less noticeable slit where a penis should be. This year he's a goddamn beast. A go-to guy, when we're able to get him the ball. His baby hook is pretty damn impressive in its effectiveness, especially when you consider he missed layups at a Devin Searcy like rate.

Charles Little, while not what we'd call "solid" at the free throw line, now seems to have solid mechanics at the line. He was really starting to come into his own before the injury, but seemed to have regressed the last game or two without the practice time to work on his game when he was out with the ankle injury.

London Warren, when he's not playing too fast on the offensive end, has been one of the best pure point guards in the league. He's arguably the best defender in the league (and I'll argue with you if you want to). This year he's been able to finish around the basket, for the most part. His jump shot's pretty ugly still, but his role isn't to shoot jumpers, so if he never takes another one his entire career, I'm fine with that. Plus his throwdowns are unexpected and always pretty damn awesome.

You all know what my thoughts on Andres Sandoval were to start the season. Look where he's at now, playing within his means, taking open shots, mixing in the dribble drive when it's open and playing a solid defensive game...exactly what we need him to do and what he wasn't doing for the better part of the season.

Marcus Johnson looks ready to make the mythical "Leap" next season. I'm pretty pumped about the MJ-Flyers Jesus-Charles Little-Kurt Huelsman combo next season, I don't know about you.

And who can forget about Brian Roberts. Certainly not us. He went from one of the top players in the league to the best player in the A-10 and the Flyers first shot at NBA glory in quite some time. Verdict: "I play, coach stays. He goes, I go."- Flyers Jesus, Marcus Johnson, Kurt Huelsman, all of next year's recruits and Jimmy Chitwood.

While I'll admit it's going to be disappointing if Brian's career ends without an NCAA Tournament berth, in our book, the season has met most of our expectations. This is a damn good team that had a ton of bad breaks that seemed to snowball throughout the season. It sucks. But I'm over with it. There's still a lot of basketball left to be played and I hope the Flyers can fulfill all of our season-long hopes.

That must have been tough to type while one hand was busy jerking off Brian Gregory.

He's fucking Seth Rogen.

"You really think players would say that about Gregory huh?"

\Trent Meachem, Desmond Adedeji, Chris Alvarez, Norman Plummer, James Cripe, Chris Spears, soon to be Stephen Thomas and Devin Searcy.

Adam said...

Chris Spears only got a scholly because he was boinking OP's daughter. He was a waste. Cripe was a disgrace to big white stiffs everywhere, and one of OPs last recruits.

Alverez was a turd, Plummer a waste of talent, and Adefatguy was a laughing stock.

With the exception of Meachem and a sober Plummer, the team would be worse with the others on it. Whatever BG did to get them out was a good thing. He pretty much admitted his mistakes in recruiting them by reducing their roles and opening the door to leave.

If you believe internet rumors with no backing, Searcy or Thomas may leave, but I doubt it.

RevScottDeMangeMD said...

Chris fucking Spears??? Are you kidding me?

Anyway...good write up Nate.

I do have 1 complaint though. I really do feel that the team needed to make the NCAA this year. With the talent that they have, they should have had better than a 5-8 record in the A-10.

Jane Eyre was awful!

Thomas isn't going anywhere, he's way to intense on the bench to want to leave. I know that's a lame reason, but watch the kid. He doesn't look like he's ready to transfer. And also, why the fuck is everyone ignoring the fact that he will get at least 14mins per game next year. He's knows that, we know that, why doesn't anyone mention that? Thomas isn't going anywhere.

I hope to God it's not Searcy. I like that kid, but if he's not getting good mintues this year, why should he think he'll get them next year? No bigs are leaving and we're adding Benson and Fab. Does Devin see the writing on the wall...Fuck, I hope not.

Thiago - maybe we will Cripe him. By Cripe I mean, kind of kick off the team and tell to go elsewhere while saying in the media, "he has decided to go elsewhere and we appreciated his time here". We "Criped" cripe and we also "Criped" Stafford. Maybe we will Cripe T as well.

Of all threee options I'd prefer T to leave. I'd take Searcy over a 3 year period than T over a 1 year period. Keep in mind also that Devin is very young, still only 18 I believe, 17 when he came to UD.

It will be interesting to see how things play out. Hopefully you homos can stalk some facebook profiles and find the scoop.

Peace

Agree with rev. We should have expected no less than a bid to the NCAA tourney this year. Even with Wright's injury. This season might be easier to swallow if we had beated GW and LaSalle and lost to Louisville and Pitt. But we all saw the potential. We should have expected to be a good team. Good teams don't lose to the bottom of the barrel in the A-10 (much less be part of the bottom of the barrel).

I have a problem with your list (other than you say it's a list of five yet it contains six items). Three of the things are contingent upon a single game. So, in essence, the Flyers could 3-26 and as long as the wins were over Pitt, Louisville and at X .. you could say the team met 1/2 of your expectations.

I tend to think BG's player development has not been that great. But the point is he clearly has better talent coming in than Purnell did. Yet he's not getting the results. More Talented Players + Worse Results = Poor Coaching. Maybe I'm oversimplifying?

Finally, do expectations change as a season unfolds? That is, if a team starts out 14-1 and is ranked in the top 15 in the nation, do we not raise our expectations? And justifiably so? To consider simply making any postseason tournament a success is ... I don't know. Maybe this post should be titled "lowered expectations."

DING DING DING! We have a winner. Excellent comment, secaur.

Sequar...math was never my thing.

And yes, when the team started out 14-1, I absolutely thought we would make the NCAA. When we didn't, I'm obviously disappointed, but going into the season, I just hoped we'd make postseason play. Postseason play was the #1 goal. Even if we met the rest of the goals, it's a disappointing season.

Again, I disagree with the player development thing. I'm not going to go into it too much, because clearly some people disagree and I don't want to go all message board back and forth until one of us tells the other one to go fuck their mother, but I don't know how much development you can expect. Kurt made a colossal leap in talent in just one season, as did London. I thought they were both lost causes after last season. That right there tells me that he has what it takes to develop players...if they're willing to work at it. Sadly, like Plummer, I don't know if Charles has it in himself to put in the work and maximize his talent. Now I'm done. /Brady Quinn-ified.

Sweet. What do I win?? So ray is the reasonable one and loblaw is the BG apologist. What happened to mcbain? Overdose?

McBain is Ray. Ray is McBain. Finkel is Einhorn.

I changed to my real name because I got tired of people asking, "So, wait, which one are you again?"

Nate,

Why would you ever root for NIT? That worked in 1997 and 1998 with Ryan Perryman teams...but anything less than an NCAA bid is a MAJOR disappointment in my mind. Dayton isn't fucking a MAC school that will enjoy an NIT bid. Do you think Xavier and St. Joe's say, "Well, I'm glad we just made the NIT...at least it's something."

No fucking way.

I'm sorry...if Gregory doesn't make the NCAA next year, he needs to go.

Brad Brownell and Anthony Grant are in the wings waiting.

Secaur said...

Ray = Mcbain? Loblaw = Nate? Pick one pseudonym and go with it, people. I went to UD, thus am having trouble following.

BG needs to go after this year. To Loblaw, the point is not to argue over the player development. The point is he clearly has more talented players than OP did but is not getting the same results. Doesn't that mean his in-game and in-season coaching are lacking? When Ron Everhart is running circles around you, you're doing something wrong.

P.S. No way on Grant or Brownell. Dayton is too small potatoes for AG now. He's headed to LSU (or maybe even Indiana). He'll be making 7 figures in a BCS conference next year. Would've been a fantastic hire, say, five years ago though.

The Flyers would never cherry pick Wright State's coach. Is he the best coach in the city of Dayton? Sure, but UD has way too much pride than to stoop to that level. Wright State is the red-headed stepchild of the Gem City. Admitting they made a better coaching hire than you did is out of the question.

RevScottDeMangeMD said...

I was half joking about Brownell...I'm just frustrated that he is a better coach than Gregory (I can admit it...I'm a man). Better recruiter? No.

But Anthony Grant is a UD alum and I think he would come back to UD...call me crazy.

I was the one saying that Dayton should have hired Jirsa back in the day because he helped recruit all of those players (Perryman, Ramod, Keith, Stanley).

The worst thing that could happen to Dayton is not only them missing the NCAA...but is if WSU makes it again. Yeah they are in a worse league...but Butler is better than the 2nd best team in the A-10.

Hulk said...

I'm confused...secaur you just posted a whole giant list of rasons that BG should stay over on your blog...what gives?

(yes that's sarcasm)
And seriously folks, how good can the player development really be when the team gets worse over the course of the season??? That's a little back-ass-words, ain't it?

The fact that a NIT birth would meet ANYONE'S list of expectations proves to me that the program is in bad shape. NIT = Failure, unless you are in the MAC or your name is Michigan.

We are UD, with the tradition, the crazy fans and the resources to expect the NCAA tournament. Otherwise what is the point? Are we really striving to be Wright State? Or are we striving to be Butler, Gonzaga, Memphis, Xavier (I know it hurts)- small schools that have such success that they become better than the shitty conference they are stuck in and overcome the mid-major label. Do you think Butler is ever satisfied with the NIT at this point? X? Zags? NO! And they weren't when they were building towards the point they are now. We have had the talent over the last 3 seasons to do something better than average 15 wins and 0 tourney-bids. This should have been BG's last stand, his great recruiting class were seniors and his 2nd best were freshmen. This is the best he is ever going to be and and 18-14 and sitting at home in March is just not going to cut it at UD.

Maybe he'd be better off at Bowling Green or Western Michigan, but for UD, he has failed, terribly.

t.freck said...

I have proposed this idea to Secuar before, it's purely speculation but ponder this...

BG is such a terrible coach that the more time he spends with his players, the more pratices he runs, and the more adjustments he makes, the worst the team gets.

It seems that at the beginning of the season we see better, more up tempo basketball with players taking the ball to the rack and so on.

As the season wears on though, and players realize that if they don't run the offense exactly how BG has micro-managed it, they will be benched, the team gets worse.

This is just a theory and I'm not even sure I believe it, but come on, this is not a single season occurrence, it's a pattern.

Adam said...

The NIT is never an expectation or a goal at Dayton. It's all about the dance. Once we get to the dance on a regular basis, the goal becomes Sweet 16, etc...

However...I do think it's ok to use the NIT as a marking on a growth chart. We've had 3 straight years with no postseason. If we do get an NIT berth this season, that's a step up.

As long as the arrow is pointing up, the program is healthy. No NIT, the arrow stays flat. That's not good.

Also, fuck Atlas Shrugged right in the ear.
